The Worlds Toughest 24 Hours

When you're finished opening Christmas presents, sipping coffee with a bit of Bailey's and deciding whether it's time to take off your Christmas onsie, consider seeing what it's like to take one of the hardest races in the world. The CBS Network is airing "The World's Toughest Mudder" on December 25 at 2 pm, an event that features 20 obstacles spread across a 5-mile loop in the desert in Las Vegas. The man, woman and team that completed the most amount of miles in 24 hours was declared winner of the race that took place in November. The show follows ultra-athletes taking on one of the most extreme endurance races known to man. The man, woman and team winner claimed prized more than $170,000. The race was an open, which meant anyone could enter and 1,500 people did.

So, you know, we had to try it.

The folks at Tough Mudder hosted us and a number of other media to the course at Lake Las Vegas where we sampled a few of the more notable obstacles. We didn't try the race. That would just be crazy. But you only imagine what it might feel like after racing for 3 hours, or 6 hours or 18 hours, mile after mile, only to be interrupted with insane, upper body and grip-intensive obstacles for one full day.

The World's Toughest Mudder serves as a kickoff to the following year's Tough Mudder season. So 2016's race introduced some new obstacles for the 2017 campaign. One of these new obstacles is Augustus Gloop, an obstacle that requires you to swim a short distance and up into an enclosed tube. You must then climb up the tube and out through the top while a hose showers you with heavy stream of water from above. Another is The Cliff, a 35-foot cliff jump into a lake. This particular obstacle didn't open until after midnight. That meant that competitors would leap through the pitch black night's sky into illuminated lake once for every 5-mile loop they completed until the early hours of the morning.
